Ceylon-The Island

CEYLON - THE ISLAND
http://members.tripod.com/kanaga_sritharan/colonisation.htm
Sri Lanka - Ceylon is a beautiful island. It lies on the southern side of the Sub-Continent of India. The island is in the shape of a mango. This island is separated from India by Palk Strait in the North and Mannar Kudah in the South.
The island of Rameshwaram, Eramer Dam and Mannar Island separate Palk Strait and the Mannar Kudah.
To the south of the island is the Indian Ocean. The southern point is surrounded by sea and nothing else. The Bay of Bengal is on the eastern side and stretches as far as Sumatra.
Forty kilometers from the island of Sri Lanka (Ceylon) is Thamilaham (Tamil Nadu).
The Central region enjoys high rainfall and has mountains. The land here is fertile. The island's Eastern, Northern and North-Western regions are open flat land with rocks scattered all over.
Long before man wrote history, this island (Ilankai, as it was known then) was inhabited by hunters and cowherds. These were stone-age and iron-age people according to research. There is proof of this on the island.
The ancient instruments of this period and those used by people in Thamil Nadu are similar according to research on Ancient History.
Later, the discovery of ancient scripts and stone carvings have indicated that the inhabitants of Ilankai and Thamilaham were originally Tamil people.
Sivan and Elder Sivan were the kings who ruled the island, which is recorded in the island's history. That the Princes of Bengal and Kalingam and their people came to this island and married Pandian girls is recorded in the island's history.
In Tamil Nadu and in the island of Ceylon there were originally Tamil people. When Prince Vijayan came to the island, a dialect emerged. Many people speaking a new language were flooding into the island. This is the period when history was reversed, (1000 BC).
During the reign of King Asoka, 400 BC, Thamilaham and Ceylon had become lands where the Buddhist religion was being spread. King Asoka's son Mahinthan came to Ilankai and converted the King of the island to Buddhism . This is shown in the island's history. Later, King Asoka's daughter Sangamitta brought a white Bo branch from Goa and planted it in Anuradhapuram, when she came to Ilankai. These were historical events. This Bo tree is in Anuradhapura up to this day.
During the time of King Asoka, a new language was being developed in Ceylon by combining, Sanskrit, Pali, Kalingam and Tamil, and thus a new language was born. This language was then introduced to Prince Vijayan and later became the Sinhalese language.
During the time of Karikala Cholan (300 BC), he declared war on Ceylon. Karikalan wanted to build a dam by blocking the Kaveri River. To achieve this project Karikalan brought experts and labourers from Ceylon to Thamilaham. History states that Karikalan built a dam across the Kaveri River. After the invasion by Karikalan, Chola kings ruled Ceylon. One of the kings that ruled Ceylon was Ellalan. He ruled the entire island from 161 BC - 117 BC.
"To the South is the sea, to the North are Tamils. How can I stretch and sleep?" asked the Sinhalese Prince Dutugemunu. From the description of this notorious prince, it is evident that his name Dutu refering to a thug in Sinhalese and Tamil.
This notorious Sinhalese prince called Ellalan to battle. The elder Ellalan was unable to defeat the young and strong Dutugemunu. The Sinhalese thug murdered Ellalan - the Tamil king and captured the Tamil Kingdom. This was the beginning of the Tamil-Sinhalese conflict. The Sinhalese captured the Tamil capital Anuradhapuram and made it their capital. This was the first occurrence where the Sinhalese took possession of Tamil lands by battle, making it their own. This is worth noting.
The Tamils kept the rest of their land and the Sinhalese kept their land. The areas closer to Tamil Nadu, sea shores and open land, belonged to Tamils. The mountainous, central parts, far away from Tamil Nadu and the southern parts belonged to the Sinhalese people.
The Aalvaar and Nayanmaars (Saiva saints) started spreading the Saivite and Vaisnavite (in English - "Hindu") religions in Thamilaham, amongst the Tamil people. This happened during AD 550-800. In the island of Ilankai the Saivite religion was being promoted.
During the time of Raja Raja Cholan and Rajendra Cholan 993-1070 AD, the entire island was brought under Tamil rule.
With the re-introduction of Saivaism the Tamils who lived in the island of Ilankai again became Saivaites. Those who became Buddhists disregarded Tamil and created the Sinhalese language in order to promote Buddhism.
In Polanuruvai the Chola capital was established and Sinhala people moved southwards. The island's mountainous region and the south became the homeland of the Sinhalese. The Eastern, Northern and North-Western regions were inhabited by Tamils. The Buddhist Sinhalese people occupied the mountainous and southern areas, while the Saivaite Tamils occupied the East, North and North West regions.
Although the Sinhalese administration was somewhat strong they were unable to control the areas occupied by the Tamil people. In 1215 AD the Pandians declared war on the island. The Sinhalese rulers retreated to the south. Kandy and Kotte became Sinhala capitals. Polonnaruwa was the Chola capital. After the Pandian invasion Yaalpanam (Jaffna) became the Chola capital.
Three Kingdoms
Now there were three kingdoms in the island of Ilankai. The South Western seashore and Southern seashore were administered by the Kotte Sinhalese Kingdom. The central mountain area was taken care of by the Kandy Udarata Sinhalese Kingdom. The East, North and North-West were administered by the Tamil Kingdom.
This situation remained during the arrival of the Europeans in 1505 and even after that. Kotte was the capital of the Sinhala Kingdom, which later fell to the Portuguese in 1505. Nallur was the capital of the Tamil Kingdom. This also fell to the Portuguese in 1619. The Kandy Udaratta Kingdom made Kandy its capital. In AD 1815 this was taken by the English.
When the Portuguese and the Dutch took over the island's seashores, they ruled the Tamils and Sinhalese separately.
The Greek explorer Ptolemy and the British who came later demarcated separately the Tamil and the Sinhala regions. They recorded this.
The Sinhalese termed their administration "Rata". The Tamils named their administration "Vannimai".
Rajarata, Mayarata, Udarata and Ruhunurata were the areas controlled by the Sinhalese, in their respective administrations.
The Tamils controlled and administered the following areas, Yaalpanam, Vanni, Kottiyaaru, Palukamam, Paanamai and Muthusilapam. These are large administrative areas. Within these large areas there are smaller areas called "Koralai" by the Sinhalese, and "Pattu" by the Tamils.
The maps and drawings from the time of Ptomey the Greek explorer and later from the period when the English came to the island, show how they recorded the areas of the Tamils and the Sinhalese separately.
In 1796 the English took power, after the fall of the Kandian Kingdom. In 1815 the entire island came under English rule. On October 1st 1833 the Colebrook-Cameron reformation was introduced in the island's Administration. After the reforms in the administration, there came into being five Provinces under one administration, in the island.
Five Provinces
1. The Northern Province - Nuvarekalvi. Anuradhpuram, Yaazhpanum, Vavuniya and Mannar remained in the Northern Province. The capital was Yaazhpanum (Jaffna).
2. Eastern Province - Thampankadawai, Vindhanai, Kottiyaru, Palukamam Paanamai. All these included as Tamil zones. Trincomalee, Muttur, Mattakaluppu, Bintenne, Wekande, Kumana and Yala were remaind in this province. The capital was Mattakalupu (Batticaloa).
3. The Upper Province. Katpiddi, Puttlam, Chilaw, Neerkozhimpu (Negombo), Kotte, Panandurai, Kalutara, spreading as far as Kurunegala. The capital was Colombo.
4. The Southern Province. Galle, Thangalai, Matarai and Ambanthotai, stretching as far as Ratnapura. The capital was Galle.
5. The Central Province. Kandy, Udunuwara and Uva, which were mountain regions, came under Central Province. Kandy was the capital.
Each of these five provinces had government officials who were answerable to English governors in Colombo.
During Dutch rule, one Tamil Kingdom and two Sinhalese Kingdoms were functioning as Tamil administration, seashore Sinhalese administration and Kandian Sinhalese administration. Later under British rule, these three administrative areas were converted into five provinces.

fitness for taurus

Fitness for Taurus
Your Ruling Planet: Taurus is ruled by Venus, the planet of beauty, luxury and comfort.
The Part Of The Body Your Sign Rules: Taurus rules the throat.
Your Metabolism: Low.
Your Health Profile:
As a Taurus, you are aware you use all of your senses to explore the world. How something feels, sounds, smells or tastes matters to you--a lot. You love sex, good food, the touch and feel of certain fabrics against your skin (not to mention skin against skin), and are very responsive to beautiful music. Yet you are also a creature of comfort and can become a couch potato as a result. A Taurus tends to be sedentary rather than athletic. An innate fondness for chocolate and French cuisine can pack the pounds on you, Bull, and inactivity combined with a high-speed modem at home or 77 cable channels on your TV can wreak havoc.
Work with your sensual nature, rather than against it, to keep a program of regular physical exercise a fun part of your life. Instead of your beloved old sweats, shell out for comfortable and flattering clothing to wear at the gym. Bring along your portable tape player and earphones so you can listen to your favorite music, and treat yourself occasionally to an after-workout sauna and message. Women Taurus seem to be especially responsive to aroma-therapy massage. When your muscles are aching as you pull into that last abdominal crunch, just remind yourself that exercise always makes your sex life more active and pleasurable.
If you find a sport you enjoy--make the most of it! Take your bicycle through a beautiful or unexplored area. When you swim, don't get locked into lapping around your gym pool forever. This summer, try taking a field trip to the old swimming hole you used to frequent as a kid. Maybe you and an intimate friend could sneak in a skinny dip! Taurus loves greenery and flowers, so working in your garden could give you the dual benefits of gorgeous tomatoes and firm calves and arms. The point is, if you can enjoy the experience you are more likely to stick to it.
Don't be radical with your eating habits, Taurus. If you allow yourself to feel deprived sooner or later The Bull will see red! The trick is to gradually make healthy changes in your diet so that you keep your enthusiasm--and your metabolism--high. Don't give up if you reach a plateau. Since you are ruled by Venus, a fairly hedonistic, pleasure-seeking planet, you will have the most success if you get regular rewards. So write down all the milestones that get you to your final goal and list a reward for yourself (a healthy one!) next to each milestone.
Finally, Venus will give you a memorable a memorable, melodic speaking voice (perhaps even an ability to sing), but you will be more subject to sore throats and laryngitis in winter as a result. Keep drinking your breakfast juice, and if you do get a sore throat, drink tea with honey and lemon or gargle with warm salty water for relief.
Your Biggest Asset:
A will of iron and plenty of persistence!
What Drives You Crazy:
Having to rush through anything. Sports that require lightening-fast reflexes and agility, such as squash, don't usually appeal to you. What you are more likely to enjoy are sports that require concentration and good hand-eye coordination, such as archery, marksmanship, and golf.
Health Risks:
Inertia keeps you glued to the past, even in sports and fitness. Your memory of being picked last in grade school could keep you out of shape permanently, if you allow it to. C'mon Taurus--if you try it I promise you'll like it!

stressbusters for taurus

It takes a lot to get a Taurus ruffled, but once done, the magnitude of the bull's temper can appear full force and just about anyone in your way could bear the brunt of it. When concerned about something like, "How on earth am I going to pay this tax bill?" Taurus needs to be left alone to meditate. Decision-making is careful process. An earth sign, Taurus needs to carefully consider all the options and weigh each for practicality. Yours is a fixed sign, so change comes slowly and deliberately.
A highly goal-oriented person, you are able to focus intently on whatever you do, making you efficient and effective. Usually you display grace under pressure. However, you are at risk of getting too close to what you are doing, focusing too intently on one portion of the project. You could be miss an important detail or misjudge circumstances. Also, you could find out later that the premise which formed the foundation of your plan was faulty, causing everything to collapse. Remind yourself to stop and question your assumptions now and then.
To give you better perspective and time to unwind, you need creature comforts. Yours is one of the few signs that would benefit from watching a little TV. Settle into your comfy chair or curl up on the couch and tune into a show you enjoy. You might opt to have a glass of wine and a few warm, roasted chestnuts at your side, or a couple of bittersweet chocolates. Fire up the wood stove or reach for a lap blanket in winter. In summer, if weather permits, open the window and feel the refreshing breeze. Your sign also enjoys music, but Taurus likes it best with the proper speakers and stereo unit. If you've set up such a system, now is the time sit back and let music soothe your savage breast.
Since Taurus is the sign of the ultimate shopper, cheer yourself up by buying one new item that you can wear right away. Perhaps a nifty new raincoat, or a fashionable new shirt? If money IS the problem (and therefore you shouldn't be spending ANYTHING) go to a gallery or museum and be around priceless objects of beauty. Go alone, and meander at your own pace. Later take yourself to lunch in the museum cafe (or nearby eatery that has a European, leisurely air) and read your newspaper in peace.
You have other options too, Taurus. Your Venus-ruled nature always feels soothed by greenery, so get closer to nature by doing some gardening or landscaping. Planting petunias, lilies and roses in the fresh air will give you quiet time to think and make you feel better. The rich, fertile, moist dirt in your hands will soothe you, too. Live in a city apartment? Plant some seeds or a hyacinth bulb for your windowsill, get a lush green tree for your living room or fresh flowers for your desk, or just go get "lost" in your local park. Better yet, drive to see a public estate that has gardens that are elegant and manicured. Spend a Saturday morning or afternoon strolling through, stop to sit down and watch the world go by--no beeper, no cellular phone allowed.
If all else fails, try a getting the very best massage you can afford. Taurus is highly sensual, and responds very well to soothing touch. If you can't afford a professional--complete with aromatic herbs to relax you--ask your girl friend or boy friend to give you the deluxe treatment complete with candlelight and special oils. Taurus rules the neck, the first place your tension strikes, so be sure your lover works on that part of you. Afterwards, cuddle up together. Taurus adores affection. You need it now more than ever.

SOLID COMBO

Talk about a solid combo! Taurus are highly possessive and mate for life, so there are no worries about infidelity here. You value reliability in a mate, so this sure sounds like you've got someone you really respect. Taurus adore having private time to display their affections, and since you (both) are highly sensual, tactile and erotic, you can expect fantastic chemistry physically -- now and forever! Taurus is ruled by Venus so you both love the sweeter, softer side of life: elegant dining, fine wine, music, flowers, art, cultural activities to attend, as well as all kinds of exquisite creature comforts at home. Venus-ruled people need beauty as much as oxygen to survive, and luckily your sweetie agrees. You may work in the fine or graphic arts, real estate, insurance or finance. All of these professions would use your talents well. You are a practical, polite, tolerant, and sensible pair who prize stability, so you are likely to agree on your values and priorities together with ease. Still, at times your life can be predictable and a tad too safe and steady. Taurus can be so suspicious of change, it isn't always a good thing. You two need a little passion and risk to stir you up, but neither of you is likely to be the one to make it happen. You both are a bit stubborn, so if you don't agree, you reach an impasse. Without getting used to taking risks, facing a crisis together will be especially hard. You see, unlike airsigsign natives, neither of you has the psychological ability to turn on a dime and rapidly think up resourceful options. Taurus like to have time to think things through thoroughly, and sometimes that just isn't possible! Still, your lover adores that he or she can always count on you. You would never dream of letting this person down, or anyone else in your life for that matter. You do things with thoroughness and concentration because you want to feel proud of your effort, and this is true whether it is a project or a relationship. Because you go slowly, you have the ability to fix errors and small flaws in anything you turn your attention to. You have found someone who understands you, Taurus, so give this relationship a chance, but also give your lover a little kick so you'll both remember to keep things interesting.

Your January Horoscope by Susan Miller
Aries Horoscope for January 2009
By Susan Miller
Think of January as a wonderful turning point. The start of January could bring you astounding career news, some of the best you've had in years. The second half of January will usher in a completely new second trend, one that will be highly social and quite exciting for you. Those two trends that I am seeing are huge ones, so you should notice them and benefit from both of them.
This month you also have a chance to see a big development with regard to a home or property situation, and it's also one you will like! There's lots going on, so let's get started!
First, thanks to an important new moon that occurred last month on December 27 (and that will still be very strong in January's first week), you will have an extraordinary ability to advance your career now. Jupiter, which is the kind planet of good fortune and happiness, will be in his final days of Capricorn, still lighting your tenth house of honors, awards, achievement, and fame.
Jupiter has been in this part of your chart all year and will leave this area in a matter of days (something we will talk about in a moment). For you to feel Jupiter's help, however, you needed other planets to push his energy toward you, and you will have precisely that in early January.
The other little planets in our solar system are gathering together to give Jupiter a happy farewell party. When you get a crowd of planets in one house of the chart, as you will have now, we have a "stellium" or crown of stars, all orbiting close to one another.
When those planets make a brilliant display of planetary affection for Jupiter, you will finally be able to find the job you want, if you have been looking (or would like to start looking now). Mars, the planet of energy and action, will be in attendance at this cosmic party and is set to stay in the career status area of your chart until February 4. Mars is a HUGE help, for Mars only makes it to this part of your chart once every two years - and when he does come, he brings an opportunity to start a new cycle.
The Sun, the governing star of our solar system, will be there, adding warmth and authority by shining his powerful light on your achievements. The new moon was at the Sun's side recently, and her presence with the Sun is CRITICAL in getting ahead.
Pluto, planet of transformations, will be at this party too, and from Pluto you can expect to get help from influential people and even from global companies and governments. Pluto is new to this house, and will stay FIFTEEN years! (To say you are about to become a force to be reckoned with is an understatement.)
Mercury is there as well, and Mercury brings news and phone calls. Mercury is the little talker planet, and that's what you want - lots of talks generated about YOU!
You may have received a phone call about a job offer at the end of December, and if so, you must follow up on that offer quickly. In astrology, it matters when you make your first initiation, so you need not actually get the job this month. What's important is that you generate that first phone call, email, letter, or meeting. If you haven't yet had a conversation about your job prospects, it looks like you will soon! Help things along by generating options for yourself.
One day that you might want to keep your antenna up for sensational career news will be on January 9, when someone influential behind the scenes may speak up for you in a big way. You'll know your career is on fire then, for sure. In addition to Friday, January 9, also mark down the day prior, Thursday, January 8, as a day you may hear news.
Keep in mind that Mars, your ruling planet (and therefore an indication of which direction you should focus your best energies), will remain in your professional sector all month. You have no idea what a wonderful help Mars will be to you as you go through the whole month of January! If ever there were a time to put all your energies forth to find a new position, it is in early January. Mars is currently helping you start a whole new two-year cycle, so it will be easier for you to get the attention of influential people at the top.
Keep in mind that having benefic Jupiter's assistance in this house is rare. You will not have this level of planetary artillery again until 2019! Be sure to look both outside and inside your company, including other firms your company may own. You might be able to switch over to one of them.
This energy is considered reward for work well done in the past, so it's not quite as appropriate for making a complete career switch to something new. OK, but now having said that, I will admit that you have simply extraordinary aspects this month, so you might be able to make things happen if you are passionate enough about making a change to a new career. Your cosmic support is awesome!
If you are self-employed, see if you can get publicity for the good work you've been doing in your business lately, or think about launching an ad campaign to spotlight goods or services. Do so early in the month - don't delay. You might put the pieces in place for the launch of a new business too, as you are currently thinking big and conditions support you. Because this trend is one that will bring all past achievements to a reward point, try to draw on the experience you have already gained for your new venture.
We need to look back at the aspects that occurred at the new moon on December 27 to see how you will be affected in the first half of January. (All new moons exert a powerful undertow of two weeks that will color the new moon period so strongly that in many cases that new moon will override some of the smaller aspects of the coming two weeks.)
With so many planets shining at the top of your chart, it's clear that your next position would be a step up, not a lateral move.
Jupiter was almost precisely conjunct Mercury at the December 27 new moon, so you'll likely have excellent working conditions, new and better computer equipment, and possibly an ability to hire extra staff to help you. You may enjoy these improved conditions immediately, but almost certainly will later in the year. Act quickly. Remember, you will have Jupiter at your side until January 5 and Mars all month, until February 4.
Mercury will go retrograde from January 11 until February 1, another reason to put the pedal to the metal with any goals you have. You will feel a slowdown occur very soon. Mercury will start its retrograde in Aquarius, so older computers and electronic equipment will start to show wear and tear. Back up your data. If any machine part is starting to wear out, you will know it and need to go to the repair shop with your appliance or electronic.
You might be wondering how Mercury retrograde will impede your progress as you move toward your new job. Admittedly, it is not a good time to accept a new job or sign contracts when Mercury is retrograde. Go slowly and ask a lot of questions. You can still proceed, but do so with caution if talks continue into the middle to end of January. Clearly, conditions will be in flux and you won't have all the available information you need to make a decision, even though you may be lulled into thinking you do. Information that you will be depending on will not be completely reliable.
There is one way you can get around the problem of having Mercury retrograde this month, and it is this: if you are talking with someone you already know from your past job or if you had been interviewing for a new job for several weeks or months prior to January.
So with Mercury retrograde, be patient, and don't try to speed the process once you've initiated things in early January. The people you are interviewing with probably don't know exactly what type of person they need. In fact, they appear to still be talking among themselves about the position. No reason to be concerned - let them sort that out. Your job is to be their number one pick - with your aspects it should be a piece of cake.
The job may take until mid-year to be awarded. If so, you will have help then too, for you will have a full moon ECLIPSE (worth three full moons) on July 7. The eclipse should be helpful in getting you into a brand new situation - and Mercury won't be retrograde then either!
There is some indication that you may have to relocate to take your new job, as there'll be another eclipse July 21 in your house of home. Your move may be across town, or across the country - or the world. It could be anywhere you want it to be! Eclipses bring massive changes, so keep your eye on the days near that date, and one month to the day later.
Speaking of eclipses, there'll be a solar eclipse later this month! We will get to that, so stay with me. (All information in good time. Be patient….)
So finishing up my discussion about your career, keep in mind you MAY settle things this month, but if not, stay optimistic because you have other aspects coming that will help you, too. There are lots of important planetary aspects that will be happening this year to help you into your new high-level job. I always feel that the life I am living now is completely contingent on seeds I planted in the past, whether that was ten years ago or a year ago. 2009 appears to be a year of exciting professional progress for you. If you are not happy, you must go out and see what's there for you!
The full moon on January 10, plus or minus four days, will bring you a surprise opportunity to settle a home, property, or family matter that has been pending. This will be a gorgeous full moon, as Uranus will send a beautiful beam to the Sun and moon. You won't see this news coming until it is almost literally upon you - this full moon brims with surprises. You may get a chance to move or to fix up your space in just the way you had hoped.
With Mercury retrograde this month, your home-related situation that comes up at the full moon, January 10, could be one that offers you a second chance with an opportunity that previously flew out of your hands. For example, if you were trying to sell your house and had a buyer, but that buyer backed out at the last minute, or YOU were the buyer and your bid was not accepted, that situation may come up again and you may be offered a second chance at fulfilling that deal. If you find you do go back to an earlier situation, things should work out very well. Mercury always will urge you to go back to the past to find ways to rework, revisit, or rethink things.
Now let's turn to the social part of the month, which will herald a fresh new influence - one you will certainly love!
All this will begin when Jupiter, planet of abundance, will move into Aquarius for the first time since 1997. This will happen on January 5, 2009, and begin to fill your eleventh house of hopes and wishes / friendships / events and people for a full year. This will be the new area of your chart to show gain, something you'll start to see become a hub of activity very soon. By time you leave 2009, you will have many more new friends, and you'll find them to be very jovial, successful types that will have a very positive effect on your life in various ways in coming months.
For an indication of just how fortunate one or more friends will be for you, look first at what I call "the luckiest day of the year," which will arrive on January 24.
On the East Coast of the United States, Jupiter will meet the Sun very early in the day at 12:24 AM EST. In this case, you will want to mark down January 23 as your bigger, more fortunate day.
A planet is always at its most powerful while it is still moving toward its peak. These two are meeting into a very people-populated house, so it appears that a friend or acquaintance will touch you by being very good to you in some way. This person may make an introduction, give you a gift, or go out of his or her way for something that's important to you. Circle Friday, January 23, and Saturday, January 24, to see what happens!
Also, you may see the fulfillment of a grand wish on this same day, as the eleventh house rules more than people you know - such as new contacts, acquaintances, and friends - but also your deepest desires. In that respect, this day may crystallize a material or spiritual wish - something you've long wanted and have had to be patient about getting!
If your birthday falls on March 24 or within five days of that date, this luckiest day of the year should be even better for you!
On top of this, a very beneficial eclipse will arrive on January 26. Can you believe that with all we have going on in January, we have a solar eclipse, too? Yes, we do! Sometimes eclipses are troublesome, but this one will be supremely fortunate for you and will open a whole new world. Many new faces are set to enter your life, and you will feel changed by the people you meet.
This solar eclipse will fall in Aquarius, the sign of groups of all kinds, so you may decide to join a club or take a leadership post in a club that you already belong to. The club you join may be profession or social. Or, at this time, you may attend a trade show that nets you many new contacts and opportunities. Whenever people gather together for a common purpose, it is considered a group, and this is the area that will glow so brilliantly for you this month AND all year, dear Aries. The result of this eclipse could be as simple as one good friend helping you get ahead or solve a problem, or as massive as your being elected to president in a community or charity post.
Aquarius, the sign where the eclipse will fall, also rules community, charitable, and humanitarian efforts. You may work in a not-for-profit field, and if so, you'll be beautifully positioned to create results you will be proud to tell others about later. Alternatively you may decide to volunteer to help a group, community, or political cause that has been neglected by society. You'd have ideal conditions to leave your mark on that endeavor, too. You would also get to display, and experiment with, various managerial styles and methods and to develop your skills, some that you'll be able to transfer to your real job.
If you were born on March 25, you are most likely to feel the positive effects of this eclipse, but even if you are not an "early born" Aries with a March birth, you should see this lovely set of aspects help you.
If you are self-employed, the eleventh house, so lit up, also rules profit from work done in 2008 for your business. In your case, money should flow in, and it will be directly related to what you did earlier.
Are you not self-employed? You won't miss out - keep your eye on February 17, a date we will talk about next month.
Remember, the place in the chart that will bring the solar eclipse on January 26, and earlier, where Jupiter and the Sun will meet on January 24, is an area that will be lit up all year for you: the area of friendship and groups! Not only will good-fortune Jupiter remain there throughout 2009, but more friendly eclipses will emphasize this area, too.
Romantically, something amazing may happen next month on February 9 at the full moon lunar eclipse. Stay tuned!
Summary
You begin the year with bright, exciting news about your career. With a plethora of planets in Capricorn, setting ablaze your tenth house of honors and awards, the offer that is generated now will be one for the record books. You may be promoted within your present company, or switched to a different division of your present firm. Or, you may hear from a competitive firm. No matter - your new position should please you more than words can describe.
Your new job will bring you up a whole new level and allow you to exercise all your leadership skills. You will be in charge of major budgets too, and you can do that - no problem! It appears the offer could come from a large, international, global conglomerate firm. January 8 or 9 could bring a surprise phone call.
Mercury will retrograde from January 11 to February 1. Be sure to proceed carefully on any new offers sent, though you will be thrilled. It is not a wise time to sign contracts or to actually agree to a new position. You can interview, but take your time.
The exception to this rule would be if your offer emanates from a former employer - you can act on that offer now because going back to someone from the past is precisely what Mercury will urge you to do in January. Even if you don't get a new job offer from your old pal or associate, you may get a tip that leads you in the right direction.
You may have already received your first career offer in the last days of December, or you may hear something this week. Keep in mind that you don't have to actually be awarded the job during January - but you do have to initiate talks in early January.
You might get something now, but because superb positions often take time to win, it may take six months or more from now to actually capture your new title. You have an important, friendly full moon eclipse coming in six months, on July 7, so that may be the time the pieces of your plan will come together.
Another big trend is blowing through your window, having to do with fun and friendship. After Jupiter enters Aquarius on January 5, you'll be mixing and mingling with many more people in the year ahead. Jupiter will be set to stay in this part of your chart until January 17, 2010 - oh, happy day!
Friends will have a beneficial effect on all parts of your life, from enlarging your interests, increasing your insights, and widening your perspective. If single, meeting more people will help you come in contact with someone intriguing, very likely through a friend's introduction.
Note the luckiest days of the year: January 23-24, when good fortune Jupiter will conjoin the Sun. That's a rare annual event, and these two magnificent bodies will meet in your friends and groups sector.
You will benefit enormously from a friend's kindness - watch and see! The lovely influences you feel on this day will also act as a preview to the year to come. New friends who care about you are on the way. The new faces that will enter your life will be happy, cheerful types you'll want to cultivate because they will be stimulating and so very affirming of you!
Dates to note:
Career news is FANTASTIC all month - the best of the decade - but particularly so from January 1-9.
Your career gets an unexpected boost of good news from a top level person: January 8 or 9.
Mercury goes retrograde: January 11-February 1.
Hear great news from an old friend - you'll be very happy: January 18.
Electronics could bring problems and need repair: From January 11, but especially from January 21-31. Buy no electronic items, machines, or appliances this month, and don't install new software until February.
A home or family situation will get solved, at long last, and bring a conclusion you'll like: January 10.
The luckiest day of the year brings news that a friend will help you enormously: January 23-24.
Most romantic dates this month: January 3-4, 5, 9, (great for blind date), 11, 21, 24-25, and 30-31.

can jesus be called shiva

Introduction
We welcome strangers to our land. Shall we exclude their gods? Is the Christian essentially dismissive, even in a kindly fashion? Does belief in Jesus involve a rejection of ‘strange gods’ or can Jesus who is called Christ also be called Shiva and be so worshipped?
This is not a new question. Some see the depiction of Prajapati in the Purusha Hymn of the Rig Veda [1] ‘also as a prophetic revelation about the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ.’ [2] ‘They maintain that, according to this hymn, Prajapati … should …. Wear a crown of thorns …. [be] Bound to a tree …. [his] Bones should not be broken ….’ [3] ‘They affirm that Prajapati is Jesus Christ’, [4] or that ‘Jesus is the real Prajapati’. [5] At the other extreme, some hold that ‘it is not possible to find divinely revealed truths regarding Jesus Christ in religious texts originating’ [6] outside of the Holy Land. This paper wishes to avoid those two extremes and to propose an approach suggested by the fourth of the inter-faith dialogues, that of religious experience.
Part I: Asking the question:
1. The Christ:
In his great act of faith Peter declares Jesus to be the Christ (Mk 8.29). His statement is both true and false for Jesus is not the glorious saviour of Peter’s expectation who must thoroughly reform his understanding of the word ‘Christ’. We know that the various Christologies of the New Testament cannot be reduced to one, for the term ‘Christ’ is polyvalent. Similarly, each Christian understands the word ‘Christ’ differently so that although there is one Jesus he variously resonates in the various believers. Furthermore, although Christian faith is placed in the child born at Bethlehem and in the Master who dies in nearby Jerusalem faith is placed above all in the Christ who is coming. The Christ of faith is above all the Christ of the future who is yet to be fully understood.
It is not enough to ask only what scholarship means by the term ‘Christ’. What is it that moves the heart for this is in fact what is being revealed? The notional Christ is one thing; the real Christ is another. This latter, the Christ that opens the heart, is the one whom the Spirit reveals.
2. Shiva:
The word shiva means “auspicious”, “beneficent”. The term appears briefly and merely as an epithet in the sacred Vedas, which are concerned more with Indra, the king of the gods, [7] or Agni, the god of the sacrificial fire. [8] It is suggested that the minor figure of Rudra, ‘a storm god and embodiment of wildness and unpredictable danger’ [9] is called ‘shiva’, ‘auspicious’, in order to placate his wild nature. Uncertainty surrounds the origin of the god Shiva who is thought by some to be depicted on seals of the Indus Valley Civilisation in the third millennium BCE. It is in the later writings, especially in the Puranas, which recount the sacred myths and legends that Shiva comes to the fore, such that he is now the god principally worshipped in India.
The deities of India, however, do not have the same status as the gods of Egypt and Greece, for the enlightened Brahmin considers them each to be the manifestation of that Reality, which is beyond all names. The manifestation is not false but neither is it absolute or permanent. The particular god or goddess is the form taken on by Ultimate Reality, which is beyond all forms. The deity is a passing manifestation leading the devotee to that absolute, ineffable Reality in which alone peace is found. Even if the Ultimate Reality did in fact manifest itself in the divine beings and their deeds, the devotee is invited to go beyond them to their source, the Unmanifest Void. Alain Daniélou, a noted Indianist and brother of the famous Cardinal Jean Daniélou, abandoned monotheism and adopted Hindu polytheism because for him it led more truly to the divine. In this respect, the gods of India are somewhat akin to the understandings that are variously given to the one word ‘Christ’. The gods and goddesses are the personified understandings of the Incomprehensible. There are as many images of Christ as there are deities in India.
3. Jesus:
The Christian faith states that the historical figure, Jesus of Nazareth, is the Christ. Even though the meaning of the word ‘Christ’ differs among Christians, the person whom they inadequately describe is held to be one and the same. It is in the individual, more than in the appellation, that faith is placed.
However, the very notion of the individual is put into question by the philosophical system called Samkhya, which is perhaps the original philosophy of India [10] and which stands at the background of its other philosophies. The limited self is considered to be an illusion (maya). The ego is just an agglomeration of characteristics, a construct of the organising mind, like the layers of an onion, which enclose nothing.
In this sense, reincarnation is not the transmigration of an individual soul but the transfer of a set of characteristics, which are wrongly considered to constitute an individual. Liberation, moksha, the ultimate goal of all Indian religions, is found precisely in the loss of self not just as a moral quality but also as an ontological reality. The only self that really exists is the absolute Self, the Void, the absolute “I am”, aham mentioned in the Upanishads. [11]
The individual, in its atomic and monadic sense, is essentially cut off from another individual, is irreducibly other. This exclusiveness is intolerable to the inclusivist Indian mind that sees everything as composed of everything else, sarvamsarvatmakam.
4. ‘is’:
The word “is”, in the phrase “Jesus is the Christ”, produces difficulties. The Western mind has been profoundly affected by Greek philosophy, which, from the outset, has enquired into the constitutive nature of things. [12] Henri Le Saux, whose Indian name is Abhishiktananda, says, in regretting one of his important works:
‘As an unrepentant Greek I sought too much to think the mystery, India. That is why [my book Hindu Wisdom Christian Mysticism], seems so outdated to me – along with the whole of theology and all the understandings.’ [13]
The Indian mind does not have a doctrine of being so much as a doctrine of revelation. The question is not “What exists?” but “What is revealed?” This attitude is subjective but not deluded. The Indian mind asks: “What is known without the constructs of the organising mind, without the delusions of limited perception?” Reality, properly understood, is not an object but a revelation. Knowledge is a relationship. Reality is essentially something known and does not exist independently from the knowing subject. The knower and the known are finally identical.
The questions arise therefore: ‘Who is Jesus to you? What does Jesus reveal to you? What happens to you when you know Jesus?’ There is no such thing as a purely objective nature of Jesus.
5. Jesus is the Christ:
In short, the phrase “Jesus is the Christ” has little meaning in Indian terms since it seems to require exclusivism, [14] limitation, individualism and mere objectivity, all of which are seen to be illusory.
6. Can Jesus be called Shiva?
Hindus already say that, like the Buddha, Jesus is an avatar of Vishnu. This is natural enough since Vishnu is the Preserver and Jesus is the Saviour. Gandhi, for his part, who revered Jesus as much as Krishna and Buddha, [15] considered him to be a divine manifestation among others but could not consider him to be unique and certainly not to be God in any proper sense. [16]
Jesus can be called Shiva in the sense of “auspicious” and “beneficent” since the Gospel accounts show him to be such. Jesus cannot be called Shiva in the Puranic sense since the stories of the Puranas are not the stories of the Nazarene. But there are other meanings of the word ‘Shiva’.
The recently discovered school of Indian thought called ‘Kashmir Shaivism’ places simple awareness as the Ultimate Reality and calls this consciousness ‘Shiva’. Now, consciousness (samvit) is not ignorant of itself. The self-awareness of consciousness (vimarsha) is the realisation that “I am” (aham), which is the supreme Word (paravac). Furthermore, Shiva is not static but vibrant (spanda) and, being unlimited act, takes pleasure in doing what is improbable and impossible. Shiva takes on the form of limited human beings and even the form of inanimate objects. Consciousness can be interpreted as love since consciousness states, “I am” and does not say, “I am not”. It cannot say: “I am not this wretched person” but says; “You are my very self”.
Jesus is the supreme Word, the Logos, who delights in doing what is impossible, namely to take on the form of the slave and to die. Jesus who often proclaims ‘I am’ is in this sense Shiva.
Part II Dropping the question:
But is not this type of thinking just the act of another unrepentant Greek? Is it not just another way of saying that Jesus is Prajapati? The third form of interfaith dialogue, the dialogue of experts, has its rightful place but is not sufficient. Theology understood as faith seeking understanding gives way to the more ancient meaning of the word ‘theology’ as the contemplation of God. The fourth form, the dialogue of experience, is needed. The divine glory, doxa, is found best in paradox [17] and is certainly found in the meeting of religions.
1. The experience of Jesus as paradox:
Jesus does not reject Peter’s calling him the Christ but immediately introduces the paradox of the suffering Messiah. Jesus is the coincidence of life and death, good and evil, sin and grace, divine and human, time and eternity, he is present and absent, come and still to come, all the paradoxes in one. “Death with life contended: combat strangely ended! Life’s own champion, slain, yet lives to reign” [18] as the Easter Liturgy proclaims He is the paradox of paradoxes who reveals the Ineffable One. He is supremely the Logos because he suggests perfectly the Silence from whom the Word comes. The Silence is Subject and cannot be talked about or made into an object of discourse. The supreme Subject can be known only when the listener has become God who is all in all. There is ultimately one Subject, one ‘I am’. By facing the paradox we become paradox. We enter into mystery and go beyond the contrasting truths to their source and become the source. Then we suddenly realise we have become the Christ for he is the paradox above all paradoxes. Only by becoming Christ can we truly know Christ for only Christ can know Christ. Only by becoming Christ can one place one’s faith in Christ. The Christian experience cannot be denied. Neither can the Hindu experience be rejected. What happens when they meet?
2. The meeting:
Shortly after his arrival in India, Henri Le Saux journeyed to Tiruvanamalai and glimpsed the famous Ramana Maharshi. They did not speak but the mere sight of this great figure revealed to Henri Le Saux the truth of Hinduism. He was profoundly affected and recognised in Ramana the reality of the Transcendent. Le Saux then began to live out his wonderful and terrible experience, [19] for he admits that he cannot be both Christian and Hindu and cannot be just Christian or just Hindu [20] and can only live with this tension until the dawn arises. [21] His admission is a wise caution in this difficult field of reflection. He felt fully the difficulty of being both ‘completely open and totally committed’, which Catherine Cornille posits as a requirement for interreligious dialogue. [22]
In the meeting of religious experience there can be no comparing, [23] no domination, no syncretism, no assimilation, no competition, no triumphalism, no despising, no ignoring, no fear, no exclusivism, no inclusivism, but pluralism [24] and more than pluralism. There is an attitude of welcome and reverence, an entry into silence and into each other’s truth. One experience throws light on another and puts it into question. The meeting is not a threat but rather a gift for it involves purification and clarification. There is in this meeting a ‘buzz’, an inchoate sound coming from the depths, a ‘resonance’ (dhvani) of the original and supreme Word. Has this not been said long ago? In paraphrasing Justin Martyr, Dupuis states:
‘Such manifestation of God through his Word is not limited to the Christian dispensation. It took place before the incarnation of the Word, among the Jews and the Greeks; everywhere there have been people who lived by the Word and deserve to be called Christian’… [25]
The meeting is an act of recognising the Word, which has already been tasted in one’s own faith, of dwelling in it and enjoying it without hesitation. And this even though some question ‘whether or not it is possible to penetrate into and fully understand that other person’s experience’. [26] This empathy is called metexis. [27] However, recognition, one of the key ideas in the theology of Kashmir Shaivism, goes beyond mere empathy. It is more than the teaching of Goethe to the effect that ‘in every man there dwell all the forms of humanity’ [28] for it is a recognition not of shared humanity but of the shared Word or the shared Spirit. John Paul II quotes the Vatican Council II which says that ‘the Holy Spirit works effectively even outside the visible structure of the Church’. [29]
In the words of Catherine Cornille, ‘The idea of a common ground of goal of religions is one of the more debated conditions for inter-religious dialogue.’ [30] The Word in this case is not so much an object of study as an experience, which is differently described in the different theologies. The Word is not a ‘neutral meeting point’. [31]
3. No rivalry
The meeting does not involve the rivalry which has often been found in Christianity and which has also been a feature of the religions of India, each of which shows how it surpasses the others and each of which interprets the others as lesser manifestations of itself. According to the Gospel of Mark [32] the disciples were rebuked for arguing which of them was the greatest in the kingdom. The same rebuke is addressed to anyone who argues who is the greatest religious figure of the world. Christ is not a Christian and does not belong to Christianity. The Christian Churches proclaim the Christ but do not control him.
4. The discovery of Jesus?
According to the parable of the Last Judgment, those who are called blessed have fed the hungry simply because they were hungry. Only on the last day do they learn, to their surprise that they have been serving Jesus all along. In keeping with this parable, when Christians reverence Hindus simply because they are holy the Christians will realise, one day, that they have been worshipping Christ. The Hindus will see the Christians reverencing them and reverence the Christians in turn and come to Christ in them.
5. Clarification:
In this meeting, the participants become aware that the Word has been expressed in the myths of Shiva and has been made flesh in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. The Nazarene will not be understood until the essence of the Shaiva myths have shed light on things still concealed from the Christians who have only begun to touch the hem of the Master’s garment. Jesus must be re-interpreted in terms of Shiva just as once he was interpreted in terms of the Biblical words ‘Christ’ and ‘Son’. Similarly, the myths of Shiva will be made most real when they are acknowledge as having become incarnate in Jesus of Galilee.
6. The uniqueness of Jesus:
Like the myths of Genesis 1-11 the myths of Shiva are also immensely powerful and instructive both about human nature and about the Word made flesh. But flesh touches flesh most powerfully and the one who gives his body as food speaks to human heart most powerfully and he most readily takes flesh beyond flesh into the wonderful Void. No other teacher of mankind presents like this. There is no competition. It may be noted at this point that the ‘doctrine of the incarnation has often been interpreted as a stumbling block for dialogue.’ [33]
7. The future:
Yet this kind of talk is still unsatisfactory. Justin Martyr shows a certain complacency. He states, in Dupuis’ words, that
‘while others have received from him partially, we to whom the Logos revealed himself in his incarnation have been blessed with his complete manifestation.’ [34]
Justin is comparing, which is understandable since he is writing an apologia. But he speaks of a ‘complete manifestation’ whereas all things will be complete only at the Second Coming. In the meeting of experiences, the one Word is heard. The Word, which was made the saving myth of Shiva, is made flesh in Jesus of Nazareth. Flesh speaks most powerfully to flesh such that Jesus is the ultimate saviour, not so much the Jesus who came but the Jesus who is to come, whose risen flesh speaks all the more powerfully and who is intimated intuited in the dialogue of experience. Memory is sweet but anticipation is exciting. And the anticipation will not be fulfilled without the cooperation of all truths. The Church proclaims the memory of Christ who has come but the Christ who is coming is more significant. The focus of shared religious experience is not the past but the future, not things taught and done but things yet to come. The participants look to what will happen in their meeting and they will find to their surprise that the Christ who is coming to them will also have the appearance of Shiva and that Shiva will be seen as fully manifest in the future Christ. This emphasis on the meeting point in the future is taken up by Process-theologians. The perennialists locate the meeting point in the past. [35]
8. Panikkar
Raimundo Panikkar, one of the most significant exponents of inter-religious dialogue [36] , proposes that the non-dual thought, the advaita of the Upanishads is the clue to finding a common form of expression between Hindu religious experience and Christian faith. [37] He states that:
“Not only is the object lost, the subject is no longer there” and that the ultimate experience is consciousness without self-consciousness, that it is “an awareness that it is not aware that it is aware”. [38] The Trinity, therefore, is not the ultimate Reality but a first manifestation of it.
I feel uneasy with this and with Panikkar’s separation of faith and belief, as though Jesus is the way to the Mystery only for Christians, that other religions can reach faith equally well through their own belief systems. Dupuis confesses that ‘the place held in Christian faith by the Jesus of history becomes problematic.’ [39] Panikkar has skirted the problem, which is not to find a common denominator but reconciliation between the religions.
Furthermore, he has understood advaita or non-dualism in terms of the monism of Shankara and not the non-dualism of Kashmir, which notes precisely that consciousness necessarily involves self-consciousness in a non-dual way.
Conclusion:
We will welcome the Hindus since they reveal aspects of the Word made flesh we have never perceived and purify us of illusions we have long held. This is the only basis on which theological dialogue can take place. A topic of this sorts bristles with difficulties. A forum such as ACTA provides a helpful context for grappling with them.

Ye r gods-God’s Word - Uncut and Unfiltered

Have you ever wondered where the strange sounding names of our week days and months derive from? Are their roots founded in Christianity, or are they, as will be proved, rooted in pagan origin? General knowledge of this subject is vague among most people, but the real truth may astound you.
According to the Encyclopedia International article “Week,” the days were names for the sun, the moon, and the five visible planets, all of which were associated with pagan deities.
The names of the days of the week and their meanings are as follows:
SUNDAY — The sun, in honor of the sun god.
MONDAY — The moon, in honor of the moon god.
TUESDAY – The planet Mars, in honor of the god Mars.
- The Saxons named this day after their god Tiw and called it Tiw’s day. “Tuesday” comes from the name of this Saxon god.
WEDNESDAY — The planet Mercury. Later named in honor of the Teutonic god Wedn or Woden.
THURSDAY — The planet Jupiter. Later named in honor of the Teutonic god Thor.
FRIDAY – The planet Venus. Later named in honor of the Teutonic goddess Frigg or Freia.
SATURDAY — The planet Saturn, in honor of the Roman god Saturn.
But how did this planetary week come to be so commonly used in the professing Christian world?
Hutton Webster, in his book “Rest Days,” provides the answer: “The early Christians had at first adopted the Jewish seven-day week with its NUMBERED weekdays, but by the close of the third century A.D. this began to give way to the planetary week …. The use of planetary names by Christians attests the growing influence of astrological speculations introduced by converts from paganism …. Thus, gradually a PAGAN INSTITUTION was engrafted on Christianity.” Emphasis added. See pages 220-221.
This planetary week with its days named after pagan deities is not of God. God Almighty DID CREATE the week with seven days. But He merely numbered the days one through seven (Gen. 1, 2:1-3). The only day He named was the seventh day. He called that day “Sabbath” (Ex. 16:22-26; 20:8-11).
The names of the months and their meanings are as follows:
JANUARY — Januarius, in honor of the Roman god Janus.
FEBRUARY — Februarius, in honor of the Roman festival of general expiation and purification.
MARCH — Martius, in honor of the Roman god Mars.
APRIL — Aprilis, which was derived from APERIO, a Latin verb meaning to open. So called because it is the month when the earth opens to produce new fruits.
MAY — Maius, in honor of the Greek goddess Maia.
JUNE — Junius, in honor of the Roman goddess Juno.
JULY – Julius, in honor of Roman emperor Julius Caesar.
AUGUST — Augustus, in honor of Roman emperor Augustus Caesar.
The rest of the months — September, October, November, December — are derived from the Latin words for the numerals 7, 8, 9, and 10. They were the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th months of the old Roman calendar.

3. The Reason Why?
A Note about Names
The three ruling dynasties of old Tamil Nadu are written and pronounced in Tamil as Cheran, Cholan and Pandian (or Cherar, Cholar and Pandiar) but most English writers write them as Chera, Chola and Pandia. We may use it interchangeably. (Cholan is sometimes spelled as Chozhan. Pandian is also sometimes spelled as Pandyan or Pandiyan).
1. Background
Emperor Raja Raja Cholan built the Thanjai Big Temple (also referred to as Thanjavur Peria Koil or Tanjore Big Temple) almost a thousand years ago; it took 4 years of construction and was dedicated in1010 AD. Why is his statue not allowed in the temple grounds and is standing on a public street further away from the view of the thousands of visitors to the temple? We are not talking about installing the statue inside the temple but within the outer walls of the temple where visitors can see it. There are other structures within the outer wall. In fact, we see a statue of Raja Rajan and his queen Ko-perum-thevi in the Tiruvisalur temple. This statue was there well before there was an Indian Government. But, alas, the Indian Government would not permit the statue of this great Tamil emperor to be installed on the grounds of the temple he built.
Some two decades ago the Tamil Nadu State government commissioned a statue of the Emperor and intended to place it within the outer walls of the Thanjai Big Temple. The Indian Government told the Tamil Nadu Government that it would not allow the statue inside the temple grounds. So the latter placed it in a nearby street. The outcome is, the many thousands of devotees and tourists who visit the temple do not see the statue.
You may wonder why the Tamil Nadu Government has to get Indian Government's permission to install the statue of a Tamil emperor within the outer walls of a Tamil Temple built by the Tamil Emperor on Tamil soil with Tamil money and labor? Indian Government decided, without any consultation with the Tamil Nadu Government, that it would take over the major temples in Tamil Nadu. Now nothing significant can be done without the consent of Hindians who control and dominate the Indian parliament.
2. A Brief Biography of Raja Raja Cholan
Who is this Raja Raja Cholan (more precisely, Raja Raja Cholan-I)? Readers who are fans of the popular Tamil novelist Kalki may be familiar with his historical novel "Ponniyin Selvan". That novel is woven around the life of Raja Raja Cholan, also known an Arunmoli. Of course, much of the novel and many of the characters in it are fiction although that fiction is wrapped around historical events. What we present in this section are historical facts taken from such authoritative works as Dr. M. Rajamanickam's "Cholar Varalaru", Nilakanta Sastri's "The Cholas" and T. V. Sadasiva Pandarathar's "History of the Later Cholas".
Raja Rajan reigned between 985 AD and 1014 AD. It can be rightly said that the Second Golden Age of Tamil Nadu started with his reign and continued for another two centuries. (The First Golden Age of Tamil Nadu in known Tamil history was in the days of the Third Tamil Academy (Third Tamil Sangam)). He built one of the most glorious empires of South Asia that peaked during the regin of his son Rajendra Cholan - I and continued for another 200 years or so under his sons, grandsons and great grandsons. He was not only a great warrior king in the tradition of Cheran Senguttuvan, Cholan Karikalan and Pandian Nedunchezhian, he was also an able administrator, a patron of the arts and a devote Saivaite Hindu.
During that period, Sinhala kings from Ilankai (now known as Sri Lanka and Ceylon) had the habit of interfering in Tamil Nadu by allying with one Tamil king against another, usually allying with Cheras or Pandias against the Cholas. (Of course, the blame should rightly be put on those Tamil kings who invited foreign interference and not on the Sinhala kings who made use of the opportunity.) So, after decisively defeating the Cheras and Pandias, Raja Rajan Cholan turned his attention to the Sinhalese King Mahinda-V. He assembled a naval armada and sent it to Sri Lanka. The Chola Navy defeated King Mahinda. After the military victory Raja Rajan built a Hindu temple there in Polonnaruva.
Having defeated the enemy in the south, he moved north. The Chola army under the command of Crown Prince Rajendran marched north, all the way up to what is now Bijapur. The army defeated all who opposed its march north, including the powerful army of Chalukya Emperor Satyasraya who ruled the Deccans.
As noted before, Raja Rajan's legacy is not just wars and conquests. He is remembered today primarily for the construction of the Tanjore Big Temple (Thanjavur Peria Koil). The temple is also called "Rajarajeswaram" after him. This Saivaite Hindu temple is one of the most beautiful and magnificent architectural monuments in South Asia. The magnificent tower and the delicate sculptures are truly a feast for the eyes. Not only Hindus from all over the world, but also tourists from around the world visit this temple.
Though Raja Rajan was a devote Saivaite Hindu, he respected other religions. He built Vishnu temples in Mysore after he conquered the region. He not only permitted Silendra Emperor Srimara Vijayottunga Varman to build the Buddhist shrine Chudamanivihara in Tamil Nadu at Nagapattinam, he also contributed money for its construction.
Many arts - sculpture, painting, drama, dance and music - flourished during his time. He conduccted a survey of his kingdom and is considered a major achievement of that time. He divided the kingdom into a number of administrative units and appointed administrative officers for each unit. Villages were governed by local elders (a type of self-government). According to Dr. M. Rajamanickam, Raja Rajan's administrative structure is comparable to modern administrative structure seen around the world.
Raja Raja Cholan is truly one of the greatest rulers in Tamil history. This is in fact the reason why Hindi politicians who dominate and control the Indian Government refuse permission to install his statue within the outside walls of Thanjai Big Temple that he built. Let me elaborate.
3. The Reason Why?
Why do the Hindi politicians who control the Indian Government refuse permission to install Emperor Raja Raja Cholan's statue within the outer walls of the Thanjai Big Temple?
Many thousands of Hindu devotees and tourists from around the world visit the Thanjai Big Temple. If Raja Rajan's statue is installed on the temple grounds for all to see, they may ask the others and tour guides about him and will come to know of his conquests, his majesty and the glorious days of the Second Golden Age of Tamil Nadu. The Hindian controlled Indian Government does not want people to know about this glorious past and the great kings of Tamil Nadu who are second to none. Hindian politicians and elite want people to think that all the glorious past of Indian history is centered on the Hindi heartland of today. They want to hide and put under a blanket all other histories, be it that of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bengal, Karnataka, Kerala or Tamil Nadu, for example.
Read the history books used at schools under the jurisdiction of the Indian Government (Central Schools and schools accredited under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)). You will read in detail about the kings and emperors who ruled from what is today the Hindi heartland, for example, Chandra Guptan, Ashokan, Akbar, et al. But you will not read anything about the Tamil kings or the Bengali kings or the Assamese kings, etc. In the Indian history according to Hindians, these lands do not have a glorious history worth mentioning although, in truth, every one of these nations has a rich past. Refusal to grant permission to install the statue of one of the greatest emperors of South Asia on the grounds of the temple he built is just another attempt by the Hindian politicians to hide the glorious past of the Tamil people.
(NOTE: Emperor Raja Raja Cholan is not the only one whose history the Indian Government wants to hide. About two decades ago, the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi tried to distort the history of Emperor Rajendra Cholan's conquest of the Ganges Plains (today's Hindi land). I published an article about it in the Tamil magazine "Thamizh Nilam" a decade ago.)

Bloodline of the Holy Grail

Bloodline of the Holy Grail
Conspiracy Nation - Vol. 11 Num. 69
In Bloodline Of The Holy Grail (ISBN: 0-7607-0735-9), author Laurence Gardner unravels Grail lore and shows its hidden meaning. The book evidences strong scholarship on the part of the author, and reveals "the hidden lineage of Jesus." Mr. Gardner provides an abundance of sources, of which Conspiracy Nation has not yet delved into. Because of Gardner's evident expertise, Conspiracy Nation, a general publication covering a wide range of conspiracy "theories," is not in a position to definitively state how accurate the assertions in Bloodline Of The Holy Grail are. Here is the gist of what Gardner says. (All claims are by Mr. Gardner, except where otherwise noted.)
THAT the supposed "virgin birth" of Jesus Christ is a purposeful error, propounded by the Roman Church. Jesus's birth was like any other, with sexual intercourse between Joseph and Mary leading to conception. The Bible goes to the trouble of specifically detailing Jesus's lineage, for example in Matthew, chapter one: "And Jesse begat David the king... and Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary..." The purpose of these geneological details was to show Jesus's royal lineage. The Catholic Church, in their own power grab, invented the idea of "Apostolic Succession," thereby misrepresenting themselves as ruling by divine right. Jesus Christ was of the royal House of David, and was in fact a King. The term "Christ" means King -- hence, "Jesus the Christ" means "Jesus the King." However, due to infighting amongst Jewish factions, and especially due to Jesus's wish to unite Jews and Gentiles against the Roman occupation, his far-sighted plans to liberate his homeland did not succeed.
THAT Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene. The Bible does not say Jesus married, but neither does it say he did not marry. (Gardner offers a lot of evidence to back up his claim that Mary Magdalene was Jesus's wife.)
THAT Mary Magdalene bore Jesus two sons, Jesus
Jesus II Justus and Joseph (known as Josephes), and a daughter, Tamar. But this information was viciously suppressed by the Roman Church, due to the threat it posed to their doctrine of Apostolic Succession.
THAT the royal Davidic bloodline did not die out with the "death" of Jesus Christ, but exists today. That Jesus the Christ (Jesus the King) did not die on the cross, but survived, thanks to help from friends.
THAT Mary Magdalene journeyed to what is now France, and that her second son, Josephes was born in what is now Marseilles.
THAT the concept of the "Holy Grail" is derived from Sangreal. "From this came San Greal = San Graal = Saint Grail = Holy Grail. More correctly, it was the Sang Real -- the Blood Royal, carried by the uterine Chalice of Mary Magdalene."
THAT "the Gospels were written in a veiled format to elude Roman scrutiny."
THAT Joseph of Arimathea took his nephew, Jesus II Justus, to the West of England for awhile. That in AD 53, Jesus II was proclaimed Crown Prince at the synagogue in Corinth. That at about this time, younger brother Josephes finished being educated at a Druidic college and was living in present-day France with his mother, Mary Magdalene. That Jesus the Christ seems to have died in India. That Mary Magdalene died in AD 63, in southern France.
THAT the first-born son of Jesus II Justus, Galains (a.k.a. Alain, in Grail lore), remained celibate and fathered no children. That the Grail heritage reverted to the line of younger brother Josephes.
THAT the Roman emperor Constantine, faced with an ascendantly powerful population of Christians, made the calculated move of embracing Christianity, and thereby co-opted the emergent Catholic Church. "[Constantine's] purpose was not to join the faith under the authority of the Bishop of Rome, but to take over the Christian Church in its entirety." That the farce of Apostolic Succession continued, with nominees selected by the Roman emperors.
THAT the true royal bloodline in Gaul (France), in the form of the Merovingian kings, was a great threat to the Roman Church. That although the ultimate descent of the Merovingian kings was Jewish, they were not practicing Jews. "They were avid students of proper kingly practice in the ancient tradition, and their model was King Solomon, the son of David." That the Merovingian king, Clovis, married a Catholic, Queen Clotilde, and through her influence King Clovis was baptized. That when news of King Clovis's baptism spread, a "great wave of conversions followed, and the Roman Church was effectively saved from almost inevitable collapse." That through Catholic plotting, the Merovingians were dis-empowered and Rome ruled Gaul (France).
THAT the name of "Britain" is derived from "B'rith-ain" which means "Covenant Land." That the lineages of Jesus and James of Arimathea were combined in B'rith-ain's (Britain's) King Arthur. That the first appointed Bishop of Rome was Britain's Prince Linus. That the Grail Family founded the House of Camulod (Camelot). That the term "Merrie England" is derived from Mary Jacob (St. Mary the Gypsy) who came to Europe with Mary Magdalene in 44 AD. That there was a widespread cult of Mary the Gypsy in medieval England. "As Maid Marian, her cult is incorporated in the Robin Hood legends" and in the Merrie Men (Robin Hood and his Merrie Men). That the "divine legacy of the Sangreal [Blood Royal] was perpetuated in the sovereign and most noble houses of Britain and Europe -- and it is still extant today."
THAT Grail lore was actively suppressed by the Roman Church, and "underground symbolism" was utilized to help evade Catholic censorship. That an example of this underground symbolism is the Tarot cards.
THAT the Knights Templars were and are the guardians of the Sangreal (Blood Royal). That by 1127 AD, the Knights Templars had recovered an enormous treasure buried beneath King Solomon's Temple. (It has been suggested that the alchemical quest to turn base metals into gold may have been a way to disguise this sudden influx of treasure.) That along with gold and other treasures, ancient learned texts were recovered. That knowledge gleaned from these texts facilitated the building of the marvelous Gothic cathedrals in France. That through their great wealth and knowledge, the Knights Templars became "probably the most influential body the world has ever known" and established "the first international banking network." That by 1306 AD, King Philippe of France was almost bankrupt and was heavily in debt to the Knights Templars. That King Philippe conspired with the Pope and they persecuted the Knights Templars. The Knights Templars were accused of heresy, arrested, tortured, and executed. That the Templar treasures were secretly removed to Scotland, and that Papal orders to arrest the Templars were ignored in Scotland. That "from the time of Robert the Bruce, each successive Bruce and Stewart heir was a Knight Templar from birth..." That, contrary to Establishment "history," the Knights Templars did not become extinct in the 1300s.
THAT the early Stewarts (French adaptation, Stuarts) had conjoined lineages from both Joseph of Arimathea and Jesus Christ. That the late Princess Diana was descended from the Stewarts, and hence had the Sangreal (Blood Royal). That the House of Windsor, into which Diana married, are imposters and usurpers. That the House of Windsor is the fake name of the House of Saxe Coburg-Gotha, changed to "House of Windsor" during World War I to hide its German heritage. That "the legitimate Royal House of Stuart (Stewart) exists today..."
